Ancient Vietnamese Tattoos
The earliest of tattoos in Vietnam date back from the 14th century. The creation of ancient Vietnamese tattoos was attributed to ancient fishermen. They Tattooed their entire body to resemble the scales and eyes of water monster so that they will be safe when go fishing.
Tattooing has begun in Vietnam around 2000-3000 years ago. Acording to Tu Dien Le Tuc Viet Nam ( “Encyclopaedia on Vietnamese Rites and Rituals”).
The art of tattooing become incredibly popular in Ly and Tran dynasty. Tattooing arts were widespread from royalty and government officials to peasant. This requirement loosened up under Tran Anh Tong’s reign ( 1293-1314). According to Dai Viet Sy Ky, in 1285 Tran army and government officials were all tattooed with the word Sát Thát ( meaning “ Kill Tarta) to demonstrate their conviction against the Tarta - the ancient Mongolian invaders. Showing their will to fight to the death in order to protect their country.
